Why Napping Is Meow Favorite Lifehack

Napping. Anywhere and everywhere. Anytime the mood strikes. That is meow number-one, all-time favorite lifehack. In fact, cats like meowself typically sleep 16 to 20 hours a day.


That’s because more than 85% of mammalian species are polyphasic sleepers. That means we sleep for short periods throughout the day. But not humans. Humans are part of a small group of monophasic sleepers. That means human days are divided into two periods: one for sleep and one for being awake. Science hasn’t proven, however, that this is the natural sleep patterns for humans. In fact, many of the humans meow know are becoming more and more sleep deprived and it makes meow worry.


Studies show that as a nation, the United States seems to be becoming more and more sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation can cause damage to your body in the short term and lead to chronic health problems and negatively impact your quality of life over time. From impaired brain activity to cognitive disfunction and moodiness in general, not getting enough sleep decreases your immune system and brain functioning levels. 


But what’s a hard-working human to do? Some recommend finding your own sleep ritual and that starts with knowing what types of naps there are:




  • Planned naps - take a nap before you actually get sleepy. Try using this technique when you know that you’ll be up later than normal or to ward off getting tired earlier.


  • Emergency naps - take a nap when you’re suddenly tired. Especially when feeling drowsy while driving or while using dangerous machinery like Snapchat.


  • Habitual naps - take a nap at the same time every day. Nap like a two-year old so you can hustle like a twenty-two year old.

  • A power nap can be 15-20 minutes - good for alertness and motor learning skills like typing.


  • A short nap can be 20-30 minutes - good for decision-making skills like recalling directions.


  • A proper nap can be 60-90 minutes - good for making new connections in the brain and solving creative problems.
